We all know the A-B-C’s of vitamins. Most of us are aware of vitamins A-E exist (some even know about vitamin K) and come in a variety of fruit and other foods. It was only 100 years ago that they were still discovering what vitamins were. They isolated Vitamin C in the laboratory the first time and the “substance which cured and prevented scurvy” was discovered and recreated. Scientists knew they were on to something. By the early 1930’s, multiple vitamins were being isolated and produced synthetically. It was basically a miracle for people who could not get the appropriate amount in their food.
Flash forward a hundred years and much of the population relies on these vitamin “supplements” to get our daily required amount. Most times it’s because of our hectic schedule and yes – diet is still not very rounded in much of the world. Burgers, fries and pizza won’t cut it. “People want their food fast and ready,” said Doug, who owns a smoothie shop in the Outer Banks, NC. “we are used to getting things fast and cheap and that has consequences on our health in the short and long-term.”.
Doug went on to say that this is part of the reason he started his smoothie shop. He wanted to offer very healthy and tasty fresh fruit smoothies and other food items which could be ordered and enjoyed within a 30 minute time frame. “People deserve to have food that tastes good and is good for them”.
I think that Doug is on to something. Even the NIH has conceded that naturally derived vitamins may be better for you than ones made in a lab. Of course, don’t neglect your vitamin intake if you don’t have a natural source. Take the supplements. They will be sufficient until you can by fresh fruits and vegetables and get your nourishment that way.
